Website of Maha prisons launched

www.mahaprisons.gov.in  - the website of the Maharashtra State Prison was launched on Friday. The website will provide the much needed information on things such as tendering process, RTI implementation, prisoners' population, jail industry and also communication between the department and citizens.


There are at present nine central jails in Maharashtra, 28 district jails, five open jails, one open colony and 172 sub-jails. There are two separate jails for women and an open jail at Mumbai and Pune. The prisons department in the state is divided into four parts - southern, western, central and eastern region for administrative purposes.


There are also sections on the website on history of prisons, correctional programmes, and establishment and on products from various manufacturing units run by jails and on jail farms too.


The website, for the first few days, will be visible at www.mahaprisons.maharashtra.gov.in
